Philip Crewell
Philip Crewell was born on November 13, 1840, in New York to John Crewell and Elida Lenke. His father was a farmer who owned $4,800 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Columbia, New York.
 
Crewell enlisted in the Union army on May 1, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 34th New York Infantry on June 15. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Chancellorsville. He eventually earned a promotion to corporal, and he mustered out on June 30, 1863.
 
Crewell returned to Columbia after the war and earned a living as a farmer. He married Mariah C. Getman, and their daughter Minnie was born around 1871. His wife died on August 1, 1879. He applied for a federal pension in February 1890 and eventually secured one. He remained in Columbia for the rest of his life, and he died there on October 21, 1917.
