John W. Farnum
John W. Farnum was born on April 9, 1842, in Concord, New Hampshire, to Timothy W. Farnum and Rebecca Bartlett. His father was a bookbinder who owned $1,000 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Concord until the 1850s, when they moved to Northwood, New Hampshire.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on October 7, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 15th New Hampshire Infantry the following day. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 4½ inches tall, with dark hair and gray eyes. The regiment took part in the siege of Port Hudson. He mustered out on August 13, 1863.
 
He returned to Northwood after leaving the army and earned a living as an “expressman.” He married a woman named Clara on December 31, 1868. They got divorced on October 6, 1880, after she reportedly abandoned her. He married Annie Mack on August 19, 1889. They lived in Northwood, and by 1900, he was working as a shoemaker. He died of pneumonia in Northwood on March 11, 1915.
