James Henry Jones
James Henry Jones was born on September 13, 1830, in Shelby County, Alabama, to Willis H. Jones and Mary H. Taylor. His father was a farmer who owned $400 of real estate in 1850. Jones grew up and attended school in Talladega, Alabama, and by 1850, he was working as a lawyer. He moved to Henderson, Texas, in the early 1850s, and by 1860, he owned $2,500 of real estate and $13,740 of personal property. He married Eliza D. Hall on December 21, 1859, and they had at least four children: Fannie, born around 1865; James, born around 1867; Robert, born around 1870; and Lee, born around 1874.
 
Jones received a commission as a captain in the 11th Texas Infantry on February 26, 1862. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and then to colonel. He returned to Henderson after the war and resumed his legal career. By 1870, he owned $10,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. He supported the Democratic Party, and he served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1880. He served in Congress from 1883 until 1887. He died on March 22, 1904.
