James H. Jones to Thomas B. Smith Jr., 24 May 1862
[in another hand] To Capt Tom Smith from Col. Jones 11th Texas
Houston Texas
May 24th 1862
Dear Tom
I have to trouble you with the reading of another letter We will have to reorganize our Company and regiment under the Conscript law, which brings about the necessity of recruiting if you can for the places of those in our Company who are over the age of thirty five and under 18 years—I have sum them up and ascertained that we will need thirty four men instead of seventeen as I wrote you. I am fearful you cant get them but do the best you can I wish to goodness we were together for I never had so / labor to perform in all my life. you know what it is though and how it is. I am getting sick furloughs for nine this morning and of course I have all the labor to do. I never want you to leave us again. I am a little envious of your position but it is as well for you to rest as I, for I now know what you had to do, when you had command. Our boys are all getting ready for a fight should there be one, but the Barracks are so bare of men they look rather like tomb tombs—if we dont fight soon, we expect to move to north east Texas—boys well
write soon Yours truly
J H Jones
