Charles S. Worth was born around 1843 in Maine to Stephen and Lucy Worth. His father was a farmer who owned $850 of real estate and $200 of personal property by 1860. Worth grew up and attended school in Kennebunkport, Maine. He enlisted in the Union army on September 26, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company I of the 8th Maine Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Overland Campaign, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He was promoted to sergeant in 1864, and he mustered out on June 11, 1865.
Worth moved to Massachusetts after the war. He married Emma Holbert there on September 4, 1872, and they had at least two children: Jennie, born around 1874; and Clarence, born around 1877. They lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and Worth worked as a carpenter. He died of liver cancer in Boston on June 5, 1914.
