Oliver Elliott was born on May 13, 1805, near Portland, Maine. The family moved to Covington, Pennsylvania, around 1809. They moved to Cherry Flats, Pennsylvania, around 1820, and he married Mary Rockwell around 1826. They had at least four children: Orson, born around 1830; Oliver, born around 1832; Victor, born on July 23, 1839; and Mary, born around 1844. They lived in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, and Elliott worked as a merchant and farmer. His wife died in 1846. He married Julia Bailey in 1847, but she apparently died soon afterward.
In the spring of 1850, he reportedly “sold his farm with the intention of locating permanently in the West.” He changed his plans soon afterward, and he operated a general store in Cherry Flats until 1868. He married Maria Harkness on July 17, 1850, and they had at least two children: Walter, born around 1853; and Judson, born around 1855. By 1860, he owned $4,500 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. The family moved to Mansfield in 1868, and he operated a shoe store with his son Orson.
By 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. He suffered a “stroke of paralysis” in August 1886 and then a “similar seizure” a year later. In January 1890, he “was prostrated by an attack of the grip, from which he never rallied.” He died on April 24, 1891.
