Matilda Case (maiden name: Sparling or Spaulding) was born on August 16, 1823, in Perry, New York, to Solomon Sparling and Martha Russell. She married William Mead Case, and they had at least four children: Helen, born on February 24, 1842; Charles, born on February 5, 1845; Catherine, born around 1857; and Frederick, born around 1861. They lived in New York until around 1847, when they moved to Waukegan, Illinois. Her husband worked as a merchant, and by 1850, they owned $1,500 of real estate. A decade later, their wealth had soared to $20,000 of real estate and $15,000 of personal property. Her husband died on August 16, 1884. She eventually moved to Muskegon, Michigan, and she died there of “senility” on September 15, 1909.
