Camp Douglas
July 24th 1862

Dear Mother
As I have not received your promised letter I now conclude to awaken you up a little by writing to you. I suppose you have heard through the papers of the row which happened here last evening, but you must not heed anything that you find in the papers for they are all encorrect reports. All that transpired can be told in a very few words. The way it was, we were all called out by the report of the alarm gun and the long roll which was beaten about half past eight. the guards crying guard guard at the same time discharging their pieces. at first we all thought that the Secesh were breaking out in a body, and we all fell into the ranks and marched off at a double quick / for the scene of slaughter and bloodshed when we arrived we found that four rebels had been shot in trying to get over the fence with ladders. It is thought that some ten or twelve have made good their escape but is not confirmed. So after staying out for about an hour we were ordered to our barracks. I receive a hellens letter and was much to hear from her.

I am so disgusted with the camp grub that I can not eat one meal a day. I want you to send me something to eat that is something substanceal such as boiled ham and biscuit and butter you can put them in a box and send them to the depot. also send me a cup saucer and glass and my spoon. there is no danger of losing them as I room with Capt
give my love to all
