Walter Huntington was born around 1842 in Liberty, New York, to Chauncy and Martha Huntington. His father was a farmer who owned $2,500 of real estate and $675 of personal property. He grew up and attended school in Liberty, and by 1864, he was working as a farmer.
He enlisted in the Union army on March 25, 1864, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 56th New York Infantry later that day. According to his service records, he was 6 feet tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He married Nancy Hardmore on April 21, 1864. He died of diarrhea in Beaufort, South Carolina, on September 3, 1864.
