Evan Dever Hester was born on December 22, 1825, in Claremont County, Ohio, to David Hester. His father was a farmer who owned $7,142 of real estate by 1850. They lived in Union, Ohio, and by 1850, Hester was working as a farmer. He married Sarah Louisa Fuller on October 25, 1853, and they had at least eight children: Emma, born around 1854; Henry, born around 1856; John, born around 1858; Minerva, born around 1860; Sarah, born around 1862; William, born around 1865; Louise, born around 1868; and Albert, born around 1871.
They lived in Adams, Ohio, and Hester worked as a farmer. By 1860, he owned $500 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on April 11, 1865, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 155th Ohio Infantry. He mustered out on August 4, 1865. He returned to Union after the war before moving to Washington, Ohio, in the 1870s. He applied for a federal pension in February 1888 and eventually secured one. He died of pneumonia in Newtonsville, Ohio, in early 1890.
