William Henry Thayer
William Henry Thayer was born on June 18, 1822, in Milton, Massachusetts, to Gideon Thayer and Nancy Price. He eventually moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and he attended Harvard University in the early 1840s. He married Ellen Handerson on May 10, 1845, and they had at least four children: Ellen, born around 1847; Abbott, born around 1850; Margaret, born around 1855; and Susan, born around 1861. They lived in Boston, and Thayer worked as a surgeon. They probably apparently moved to Vermont in the early 1850s before settling in Keene, New Hampshire, later that decade. By 1860, Thayer owned $800 of personal property.

He received a commission as a surgeon in the 14th New Hampshire Infantry on September 19, 1862. He may have been “dismissed” on January 8, 1864, but he returned to the regiment on February 18, 1864. He mustered out on July 8, 1865.

Thayer moved to Brooklyn, New York, sometime after the war. His wife died on April 22, 1897, and he passed away of heart disease in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1897.
