Richard K. Lunt was born on November 11, 1843, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, to Abraham and Elizabeth Lunt. His father was a mariner and his mother was a teacher, and the family owned $800 of real estate in 1850. He grew up and attended school in Newburyport, and by 1860, he was working as a clerk.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 22, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 48th Massachusetts Infantry on September 16. He apparently lied about his age, claiming that he was twenty years old. The regiment was assigned to the Department of the Gulf. He died on June 14, 1863, during the siege of Port Hudson.
