Richard K. Lunt to Elizabeth A. Lunt, 10 October 1862
Camp Lander Oct 10th 1862.

Dear Mother
I received your letter and package and was glad to hear from you We did not come down to Newburyport as we expected to but never mind we shall come down sometime We drill now with all the Companies together and they look well. Yesterday was a very hot day up here and we drilled with our shirts sleeves rolled way up and we went the double quick in good shape and the sweat did run good. Uncle Paul Aunt Abbie Hannah and Mrs Adams were up here yesterday. The 5th Rgt. is going to leave pretty quick They are a hard sett of boys they run the guard every night and have knock down 2 of the guard. they go off down to the tavern and get drunk and then come back and fight The Officers found out where they got it and so they sent the Provost guard down to the tavern with guns headed by Everett, the Provost Marshall. they backed the mans horse up and put him in the wagon with two barrels and 3 kegs of rum and some bottle filled with other stuff but I believe the guard made love to the bottles themselves I believe it was wine. They put the man in the guard house and the rum they put in the Officers quarters I suppose that they will help themselves to night with it. I am writing this letter by candle stick the new style to stick in the side of my bunk they / are nice things to lay in your bunk and read or write by we pay 3 cts for piece candle up here they will sponge it out of the soldiers if they can Dana Dodge had to close up one night the 5th was going to clean him out. There a man that come on the field and sell some milk when he come on last night he come up to our barracks and the boys rush out and tip his cart over and raise the old scratch with. this morning he kept off he wont come near us again I dont think. why we would have to throw our coffee away it would turn as quick as a wink so they fixed him for it. When you write again tell me ow Adolphus Greely gets along if you know.

(I dont think of any thing more to write now so you must write as soon as you receive this) as I am jest closing one of the boys come in and said that the Charlstown boys are going to clean Dana Dodge out to night and I am glad of it he ask so much for his stuff.

So I must close from your
son & Brother
