Margaret Jane Torbet was born around 1840 in Pennsylvania to James and Phebe Torbet. Her father was a “locktender” and “gentleman” who owned $300 of real estate and $50 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in East Donegal, Pennsylvania, until the 1850s, when they moved to Monaghan, Pennsylvania.
She married Cornelius Crist around 1869, and they had at least four children: Cora, born around 1870; Elmer, born around 1873; Nelson, born around 1877; and Hunter, born around 1884. They lived in Mad River, Ohio, and her husband worked as a blacksmith. By 1870, they owned $250 of personal property. They moved to Miami, Ohio, in the 1870s, and then to Johnson, Missouri, sometime in the late 1800s. By 1910, they were living in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was paralyzed sometime in the 1910s, and she died in Swan, Missouri, on February 2, 1919.
