Edward B. Sayers
Edward B. Sayers was born around 1829. By the early 1860s, he was living in St. Louis, Missouri. He sided with the Confederacy during the war, and on October 4, 1862, he received a commission as a captain in the Engineer Corps. According to his service records, he was 6 feet tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He served as chief engineer on the staff of General Leonidas Polk. Union forces captured him at Chickamauga on September 19, 1863, and imprisoned him at Johnson’s Island, Ohio. He apparently remained imprisoned for the rest of the war, and he finally swore an oath of allegiance to the United States on June 12, 1865. He died sometime after the war.
