Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 2 May 1863
Suffolk Va. May 2nd 1863
Dearest Wife
I received your letter of the 26th ult. last night I expected to have received some time before but it takes the letters so long to go & come that I not ought to have expected it before I know that you will be disappointed when you do not find a picture in this but you will not blame me when I tell my story When I wrote my last letter we were in our old camp In a day or two after that we were ordered out here on picket & the Regt has been here ever since/By out here I mean on the Banks of the Nansimond The Regt. is picketing just above the fort we commenced building. Which is now finished & is called fort Connecticut. Several Regts. including the 8th Conn crossed the river under Gen. Getty just below fort Conn. & took a rebel battey & some 129 prisoners but probably you heard of that some time ago through the papers & now before I go any farther I will tell you what has happened to me Dont be alarmed it is nothing serious but a bit of good luck I have been transferred to the Artillery I have the/honer to command one of the Guns captured from the Rebs. Lt. Talcott of Hartford commands the section of the Battery that I am with We are now at Battery Morriss if you you should see a plan in any of the papers whe of the defences of Suffolk which you undoubtedly you will know where to find me if you see Battery Morris put down. It is the second Battery above fort Conn The Rebs are quite numerous across the river & when the 21st is picketing they come across occasionaly & talk with the boys they are mostly Alabama troops They say they are anxious/for the war to close While I was with the Regt since it came down here I worked almost every night digging rifle pits it took a hold of me like commencing a Springs work at farming There was an artist just along here sketching the fortifications he sketched this Battery I saw this morning in the Hartford papers that the 22nd Conn. Regt had charge of the the captured Guns but they never have had charge of them nor any body else If Amos Mitchel can’t write to me I shall not to him
CGStanton
I have not had time to look for mistakes
