Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 25 June 1863
Yorktown Va. June 25.1863
My Darling
I arrived safe & well at Fortress Monroe yesterday morning. There I learned that the Reg had moved from Suffolk on Monday & were at Yorktown or farther up the Peninsula Instead of going to Suffolk I took the first boat for this place in order to over take the Reg. I arrived here about noon & found the Reg. It would have been as well if I had gone to Suffolk for I have nothing here. We have nothing with us scarcly being in light marching order We expect our destination is Richmond There is quite a force of us here/
Well Mary I got along with the parting much better than I expected to. It was by a strong effort & by your controling yourself that I kept up so well at Westerly Then on the trip to New York I did not feel so bad on account of C.H.K.’s company By the way he paid the fare to New York we had a State Room & breakfast in N.Y. the next morning But I had to pay full fare from N.Y. to Baltimore they would make no reduction on the train I had to take On the trip from N.Y. to Baltimore I was on rather a low key But the worst I felt was before I went to bed Tuesday night on the Baltimore boat I have heard of a theory that/when one person is thinking strongly of another that, that person will feel conscious of it It did seem to me that my Darling Mary was experiencing some such feelings as I was between the hours of 6 & 8 Tuesday night but I hope you was nicely over it before that time I am now contented & happy & ready for anything before me On the whole I cannot but think that furloughs are are benificial to the moral mental & physical condition of the Army judging from my own case. During my whole life I shall never forget the happy days I have just spent at home I reported to the Major who received me kindly & shook my hand I have not yet learned/whether he belonged to them or not All complimented me on my improved appearence Some of the boys said that is what his woman has done for him I shall try and go back to Suffolk & stay but do not know whether I can yet or not John is well & appears glad to see me back. I must close in order to mail my letter I will write again soon Give my love to mother tell her to keep up good spirits You darling I love better than ever
Court
PS My money was left back at the old camp & therefore I have not got it yet
