Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 29 August 1863
                                                                                    Portsmouth Va. Aug 29th  1863

My own dear Mamie,
It is just such a morning as I should like to be at home in It is nice cool & pleasant. We have such weather now most of the time. I was sick all night last night but am better this morning I don’t know of much of importance to write but still I think I can find something. Of late it has been rumored about so much that we were to leave here, that we now live in constant expectation of the order. Maj Crosby is still under arrest. Capt. Kenyon arrived from home yesterday he is looking much better/

There is considerable activity up to the front as they anticipate an attack. The news from Charleston yesterday was quite cheering & I hope soon to hear of its downfall. The “Sight” for promotion looks rather dubious just at present there are so many aspirants and they are trying so hard I suppose John will have a pair of shoulder straps soon. It looks so now but dont mention it for they will feel large enough when they do come I suppose if you are going to have the measles you have had ere this I hope you had them light Oh, I am sad this morning I dont feel like myself but it is but the result of/last nights illness I shall be all right in a day or two if I was with my darling I should sooner the express package has come but is at the office yet John got his money all safe I dont know as you know any thing about he sent home for $100 dollars & has got it. I wrote you some time ago that I though some of the boys would be at home on fulough but that has “played out.” They cannot any of them get one Bill Coats does more than swear to think that he cannot get one My love to Ida & Mother
Excuse the length on account of sickness

                                                                        Court
