Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 17 November 1863
                                                                                                Norfolk Va. Nov 17/63

My own long neglected but
            Daling wife Mamie

I am well!!! I consider that explanation necessary as I have not written you before this month. Now for reasons they are slim ones for me to give to such a wife as Mamie I have but one principal & that is I have been busy I have been acting Orderly & have had scarce a minute time to myself I would think I would write at such a time & then something would turn up & prevent another time would be appointed with like results untill weeks have run by/But I will never neglect you as long again During this time I have constantly received your letters & they have been as good kind & the last so anxious about me During all this long time I have not forgotten my Darling You are constantly in my mind
Every thing moves on in about the same old style here Ramon Kenyon has got back from Washington He sais he is booked for a 2nd Lieutenancy I would not take a Captain’s commission over niggers if I would I might have had it before now I raised a company of Niggers in these two cities when I first came here & had the promise of going to Washington with them & if I had gone I could have had a commission over them But the Boat was/sent after them in the night & I did not go. I have been glad ever since that I did not There are a large number from the 21st that have got Nigger commissions Several Privates. We raise the devil with Kenyon about his commission if it had not been for the Judge he would never been a Corp in the 21st we have plenty of smarter Recruits than he is. John has applied for a fulough to come home to bill’s wedding I think he will get it. He Paul Hillard is also coming home to recruit There are several from the Regt coming home on the business I should liked to have come but could not as there was taken only one from a company Paul will get a lot of Recruits./

You manifested much anxiety about how I should like your late purchases It seemed [?] for one to ask me. I wish I might be to home to see you wear them. Me find fault with you accuse you of extravagance I should look pretty. I hope you are pleased with them and if you are I am. I suppose you will be at Nell’s marey May joy attend you I wish I could be there but as I cannot try and enjoy your self the best you can Dont make me jealous though for that is a dissagreeable feeling with me
Tell mother to take care of herself so as to live till I get home then I will take care of her She must get somebody to do the chores.

Much love Darling I will write again soon
