Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 23 August 1864
Field Hospital
18th A.C. Aug. 23rd
Since I wrote you last I have received your very welcome letter of the 8th finished after you got home—When I wrote last I supposed I had entirly recovered The first day after we got in the pits It rained very hard & it has rained more or less every day since I remained in the pits (6) days wet most of the time. The sixth day I began “to play out” The next day I went out to camp. I lay there a couple of days & then came up here I am some better now. Have had quite a Fever but think it is broken up now/
I am not dangerouly sick & therefore you need not be alarmed. I wish I might get home on it but have no hopes of that. It would be very pleasant to be at home at this season of the year. Capt Kenyon left this hopsital yesterday for the Base Hopsital. They think he is mortaly wounded. I saw him soon after he was wounded We were in the the pits & the ball glanced down by hitting the breech of a musket The same Ball grazed the neck of Act Adjt. W. P. Long I cant write more now. will write again soon Tell mother not to fret about me write soon. Much love Good bye Court
