Dear Mamie
I should have written you before to have relieved your anxiety—You have undoubtedly heard of the last fight—In which our Regt participated I did not go with them being sick at the time. They had orders to move at 9 oclock in the evening the first intimation they had. Then they did not know where they were going/

They started at the appointed time & crossed the James a short distance below here They then marched directly up the river. after making a distance of about 3 miles driving the Reb Pikets before them all the time They came upon a line of earthworks which were very strong but they charged and carried them there were six of our Regt entered the Fort on the charge 4 were from Co “G.” among the number was John Coon Tell his folks at home they may well/be proud of him he is all right now Since the fight I have been temporarily detailed in the Commissary Dept. till I get better I was up to the Regt yesterday. The boys there were all well The wounded in our Co were Sam’l Pecker. Cheek slight Corp Clark Leg slight Corp Rix Arm Slight Noah Wilcox Missing probably killed The Regt will not lose very heavy I should feel better if I had been well enough/to have gone with the boys. However they do not think ill of me for staying back—They gave me a Reb Sword Belt yesterday when I was up there I dont know how soon I shall go up to the Regt but probably within a few days. Meantime I hope you will write very often I write as often as I can—Give my love to mother & I will never forget you my darling—

Excuse my great haste
                                                Court.
