Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 29 September 1864
B. Hundred Va
September 29th 1864
My own dear Mamie
It is some time since I wrote you last partialy through neglect but mostly on account of sickness. I wish I could write you one letter and not complain of being sick. That same old Fever & Ague sticks to me yet but it will wear off with the approaching cold weather. Nothing of interest has occurred since I wrote you last We are still in the same position We received the news of Sheridans victory with/great shouting & all the Artillery along the whole line was opened firing a salute with shotted guns. Ed. Wheeler has got back from his furlough says he saw John in North Stonington the day before he left. I expect they have offered John a 1st Lieutenancy seeing that they can make no 2nd Lieuts. Wheeler says he will not come back though. Capt Brown will now wear two Rows of Buttons with a Silver leaf on his shoulders. Packer will have another Bar added & so goes the military world Bill Coats has gone to the Hospital with/the Dropsy on his Testicles Say nothing about it though. I have written Ben since I wrote you last about the waggon. He wanted to by it I tell him to take it & get it repaired. That I do not want to sell it & will settle for the cost of repairs if I ever get home. What you wrote about going Graping makes my mouth water for some, but if I could be there to go with you I think if it were necessary of condition of my going I could forego the pleasure of tasting a single one but I must close this very brief letter for I feel one of/periodical “shakes” coming on. Perhaps you are not acquainted with the “critter” Well for a brief description First I feel chilly for about an hour then that is succeeded by a high fever & that by heavy sweating making a fellow feel in the morning like a neglected Dish Cloth. I will write again in very few days as we expect to paid soon hoping in my next that I shall be able to remit something substantial I am as ever with much love
