                                                                                                            Nov 1st 1864
 
Dear Mamie
                        I received your very welcome letter yesterday I hope that before this your anxiety will be relieved by the receipt of my last—Since I wrote you last we have been on a journey toward Richmond We went to that noted place Fair Oaks It is a long flank march. We were under fire for quite a length of time & suffered much the night we fell back It rained as hard as it pour down. I was wet through & covered with mud from head to foot I lay the latter part thougherly wet through & cold Oh how cold. But I got out all safe “stood up to the rack” to & am all right now/
 
Mamie dear, you must excuse this over brief letter it is all I have time to go in to days mail I love you just as much as if I had filled a sheet of fools cap Give my love to mother I hope to come out all right in the end I will write again very soon & give you all the particulars of the late fight
