My Dear darling Mamie
It has been a long time since I wrote you last I have received several very kind letters from you since writing. It has been carlessness for there has been times that I might have written if it was but a brief letter. but I have been hardley settled since I wrote you last. We have moved twice in the coldest of weather We have moved no great distance just changed camp & now we occupy I hope our permanent camp for the winter that is unless the Div moves. It has been a very busy time at work to. I have scarcley a minute of daylight to my self. My duties will be easier now/Capt. Cook has been home on a leave of absence & I have had his work and mine to do I am getting along first rate now. I rather expected our divisions would have to go to Wilmington, but the same troops went as went before. I hope they will do more this time. Butler did not go with them this time When they come back perhaps there will be a chance to try for a leave of absence but it is useless now I would like to come home first rate But the time is growing short when I can only (8) months more I hope there will be peace by that time if not before.
I have got the pictures from Norfolk and/they are miserable enough don’t look at all as I do I will send you two & hope I may get some better. Must close this I will write again very soon Much love, darling remember me to mother
