Roswell Ackley was born on March 14, 1805, in New York. He married a woman named Almira, and they had at least six children: John, born around 1833; Beriah, born around 1835; Lovinus, born around 1836; Henry, born around 1838; Chauncey, born on September 6, 1840; and Mary, born around 1848. They moved to Tioga County, Pennsylvania, in the 1840s, and Ackley worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $1,200 of real estate. He became a justice of the peace in 1852. By 1860, he owned $3,500 of real estate and $900 of personal property. A decade later, he was working as a carpenter, and he owned $200 of personal property. He died on May 31, 1883.
