Michael J. Sater was born around 1830 in Kentucky. He eventually moved to Burlington, Iowa, and he earned a living as a farmer. He may have married Mary E. Jones, and their son Charles was born around 1858. The 1860 census listed him as a “convict” and a “horse stealer.”
He enlisted in the Union army on October 15, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 14th Iowa Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Shiloh. He was wounded in the hand and leg near Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on April 9, 1864, and he mustered out on November 16, 1864.
He returned to Burlington, Iowa, after the war. He married Cynthia Jones, and they had at least four children: Eliza, born around 1870; Joseph, born around 1874; Birdie, born around 1875; and Lucinda, born around 1878. Sater worked as a farmer. He applied for a federal pension in May 1878 and eventually received one. He died in Burlington on January 13, 1895.
