Near Vicksburg Miss May 27 1864
 
Dear Mother & Famley
                        I imbrais this oppertunity of informing you that I am well I hope that those few lines may fine you all well
 
I hainte heared from home for a long time I have ben on a nother raide upt red Rive in Lusand we was gon 74 dayes onder 42 dayes Schrimishen 8 harde Batels as follows is thair names Ft Derucey
 
            March 14
F with              260 Prisners 9 peaces of artilery
 
            March 21
Pine hill          250 prisners 4 peaces of artilary
 
            April 9
Plesent hill whear we loste 28 peases of artilary I neve heared how maney prisners was lost thare we had to cove Corprel bankes retreate back to the mississippi River
 
            Apral 22
Kain River trap got 50 prisners 2 canon
 
            May 8
Foundre near Govnear Moers Farm 1 canon
Snagy Pointe wheare the rebels captred 3 mail boats & burnte thame whil we was a bove we had to drive thame 14 day May / In order to let the fleate get paste
 
            May 16
Markesvill we captred 6 peases of artilary
 
At Old Oake we had to fite thame in order to cros Chahilio biro to get to the mouth of red River we captred 4 hundred prisners 5 peases of artilary but they said we are lots the loser yet on the acount that Bankes loste so mutch at Plesent Hill Batel
 
The Rebbel prisners cals Bankes their Comisary on the acount one year a he let thame have all of his train whitch suplied thame one year this year he let thame have half of his train whitch you can se the partictoler in the Pappers

I will direct this letter to you in hopes that you will hand it to Mother and And anser it for her While I was gone I rote sevrel letters to you & Mother but I suposed that they was captred with the boats
 
F M Johnson stod the trip very well for a boy John is well
 
Franke is a riten a letter so he may tel his one owen Stoery we hainte receved any pay as yet but we are expecten to be paid ever day
 
I expect to pay you a visute in a bout five month more
 
we ar expecten orders to march every day but I donte know to what pointe the Boyes ar in hops it will be to Cairo Ill I never wante to go on a nother raid while i am in the Armey 
 
I will rite to you as son as i get in to campe
 
I sende you my love and respects to you & all enquiren frends
