Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 4 November 1864
Dear Mamie
I hasten to write you a short note on account of having recd your very welcome letter. I wrote you Sunday a very despairing letter. It is all right now I was very happy to hear from you am happy to tell you that you may put the Lieut before my name and First Lieut to, that makes quite a difference Dont it? I did not have much to say about it in my last because I wanted/to be sure before I crowed that every thing was all right now I was mustered in yesterday as 1st Lieut for the unexpired term. I am happy to think that the change was made before I got my commission for I should not liked to have been mustered for three years more. When I come to take in the full sense of my new position I must confess that I feel some pride & why should I not? It is what I have earned neither wealth influence nor favoritism gave it to me. Besides I jumped 7 Orderly Sergts. & number of 2nd Lieut more especialy one in the Co. I was promoted into. (Co. H.) in which was an orderly Sergt/& 2 Lieut. But I also believe hold a place in the mens esteem they all use me like a brother & treat me with respect due the Rank. I have said enough about myself to talk in that strain will make me proud. I talk about the other boys We have made promotions to fill the vacancy caused Bassett of Voluntown is to be Orderly Sergt Geo. Dennison to Sergt. & Jim Maples to be Corp. I expect it will make more of man of Jim making him a Corp. He is a good fellow now though I have some things I shall send home in a few days My commission Discharge &c. They will look well framed I recd the money all right am well pleased/with the precaution took of not sending all at one time I must close now will write again soon Give my love to mother I wish a merry Thanksgiving We are going to have fowl’s [?] we will have quite a jolly time Good bye with much love Court
P.S. Dont get to proud about your Lieut. C.G.Stanton
