December 3rd 1864
Dear Mamie.
Your very good letter of the 25th I received several days ago & my excuse for not writing sooner must be the same as yours that I was expecting to come home I put in an application for Leave of Absence the 25th for (13) days & it was disapproved I felt in hopes that it might be approved I was very much disappointed when it came back. But two years as soldier has learned me to not mind such disappointments great as they are I thought at first that I would put in another application the next morning/but I found it would not be of any use I therefore did not I have one in now to go to Norfolk for (5) days where I shall get an Outfit It will cost an enormous amout of money but I get good wages now. A suit of clothes will cost me ($75.) dollars Boots $18. Sword [?] & Belt $75. I could have saved considerable beside my expenses home if they would have let me gone My pay now is $108 per month but it costs a dollar a day to live. However after the expense of an outfit I’ll hope to save considerable money I have only nine months more then I will be with my Mamie sure I would be very glad to have Tom Avery a private under/me but if I should ever get home I think the cowards will have (“to play second fiddle”) It is pleasant to talk with the boys about what we propose to do when we get home as far as Politics are concerned we do not intend to have Copperheads serve us when we get home after saving the country we will not give it up to home Traitors— Traitors because they are to cowardly to espouse the right side. Look at your Copperheads any where & see if they are not cowards. Enclosed I send you my Commission take good care of it You can have it framed if you like I will send my discharge in a few days/
I wish my friends thought enough to give me a Sword if they are to damned stingy I would send them the money if they would only go through the form—must close now Give my love to mother
Good bye
Court
P. S excuse this letter I have written it in the greatest hurry
