Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 8 February 1865
Camp Pioneers 3rd Div
February 8th 1865.
My Dear Mamie
You are thinking why Court. does not write Well! I have thought of coming home but do not now. They have changed the orders ‘till now it is almost impossible for one to get home. There has got to be very strong reasons. Like a case of one of my men for whom I applied for a furlough a day or two since His were that his wife had become unfaithful. If such was my case I would never ask to go home; but he had the “face” to. Well after I found that it would be useless for me to try to get home, I waited like “Micawber” for something to turn up Beside I have not been hardly/in a proper state of mind to write I have received several letters & this is the first I have written for some time. I received one from “Ben”, also his enclosed with yours which you undoubtedly read If he finds such difficulty in reading mine I think I will not write him again very soon I think they must be over fond of you to want to keep you ‘till Spring. However it will be more to your taste By the way, it must be awful tedious cooped up down home there with no “society” It seldom gets dull out here when ever there are any symptoms of it the “Rebs” give us a Good vigorous Shelling to break the monotony There have been syptoms of a fight for several days we have to keep four days cooked rations on hand all the time In such weather as it has been to day though I/hardly think we shall move far It has snowed all day & tonight it is as cold as Greenland. To day I had more men detailed making now over a hundred; quite a respectable command & they keep me quite busy.
We think but little of the Peace Rumors & perhaps it is best that we should not. It is getting very late and I must close I will write again very soon. It takes much longer for a letter to get here than it used to I don’t know why
Courtland.
