My Dear Wife
It is with great pleasure that I am able to write you from here I was among the first to enter the place this morning All night last night there were heavy explosions in this direction This morning we discovered that the hill in front of us was evacuated, & at once pushed on into Richmond without opposition The City was on fire in a number of places. A large portion of the city is burned I have been all over the place to the Libby & in the/Confederate capitol we are quartered in Gov. Smiths house. I dont know where the Confederacy has gone to I tell you I felt proud when I rode into the city I have not captured many trophies. I have got two horses that is the most

Yours with much love
            in great haste
                                    Courtland
