Mamie Darling
I received your kind letter of the 5th yesterday. Was very happy as usual to hear from you I was glad to hear that you had not filled your mind with the vain hope of my coming home. But the time will soon come now when I can come home for good. The “Peace” business has I think proved a miserable abortion. Nothing unusual has transpired here since I wrote you last We had a grand review of our Div. last Sunday & after that all the officers met at these Hdqrs. Every thing was gay as all military gatherings are. Lt. Col. Brown left for home last Saturday morning. You will undoubtedly see him./

I have advanced a “Pig” if not more since I wrot you last I now have the honor to be Chief of Pioneers which is a Staff appointment. I have a fine horse to ride & am under the orders of the Div. Gen. (alltogether a very good thing) I shall act independent of the Staff though; for it is to expensive to be a Staff Officer costs one more than his pay but there is a grand chance to make display & is considered a “big thing” in the Army Never mind I’m modest I have recd a letter from Wint. Ward & one from Edwin within a day or two I hope to receive another from you in a day or two. They are my only consolation but I am afraid that this will not Afford you much it will be so brief But with much love I must close
                                                                                                Courtland

P.S. Direct as before. I have sent no letters to Norwich.
Court.
