Courtland G. Stanton to Mary E. Lewis, 21 February 1865
Headquarters 3rd Div.
24th. A.C. Feb. 21st
My dear Wife
I received your very kind & welcome letter yesterday None the less welcome on account of containing that “Ten spot.” I suppose we shall be paid off soon You need not send any more & I will more than return that soon. It gives me great pleasure to have you write so fully about matters at home of late. That is as it should be between man & wife. You were afraid I was offended were you you little Goone, far from it But still I cannot explain that peculiarity about my letter It is owing to my/peculiar nature something that requires a person to see me at all times know all my troubles in order for them to understand. For two or three days past my mind has been greatly depressed Your good letter done much to relieve me. I have been a little sick for a few days but am better now some Jim under my Ribs but a mustard poultice held on till’t burnt a hole most through me removed it I have got the Poultice yet It his just so I can get a glimpse of it as I come in the door I regard it as one would a dog that had bit him & then retreated under the bed Curious animals those Poultices are/
You say they are getting proud I should think what young men there are at home would strut considerable I know that society has changed considerable since this war people have made money off of the poor soldier & think that now they are enjoying their ill gotten gains But a true soldier that will pay homage or count favor from such had ought to be scorned. I will bow the knee to no such if I get out all safe. These home people as the empty shoes pass them no matter how tatered their clothing or empty their pockets, should lift their hats & stand in silent respect/
I am glad mother is going to let the farm wish she had done it for the two past years. Nothing unusal has occurred with me except that I have received my order appointing me a staff officer as Chief of Pioneers & Act Engineer Officer of the 3rd Div 24th A.C. This adds to my duties somewhat as I have now see to the construction of all the works maned by our Div.
Write soon Mamie dear
Court.
