Mary E. Lewis to Courtland G. Stanton, 26 May 1865

My Dear Court

I have not written for some time. have been waiting to hear from you. I got a letter yesterday, and now will endeavor to answer it. You still think the regiment will have to stay their time out. I saw in the paper a few days ago that all the troops which were to Washington at the review and whose time will be out before the first of Oct were going to be discharged but I don’t know whether the 24th Corps will were there or not. If you do not see any signs of coming home before long I think you had/better resign right off, and Mother thinks so too. I don’t think you had better stay in that unhealthy climate all summer for $150, and besides if you cannot save anything there you might as well come home. you have staid long enough and the 150 is nothing to your health; You say you can take $150 worth of comfort between now and fall, I think I can take $75 worth and you the same and that will be equal to the whole amount. They say there were lots of people went from Norwich to Washington to witness the review I hope you were there, for if you were I shall expect you home soon. I am glad you are not with the Reg’t/

There is no news to write that I can think of. I want you to come home. I want to see you. I don’t believe I can wait until fall. Mother says “tell him he had better resign”. We all want you to come, do come. If you come don’t fail to bring your blankets and everything you have got don’t throw anything away now remember the blankets especially. I cannot write more now. Good-bye Don’t fail to resign.

            Never mind the 150

                                    Much love

                                                Mary
