William H. Parshall to Henrietta Parshall, 28 August 1864
In Camp near Vinings Station Ga.
August 28th 1864.
Dear Mother
Your welcome letter of the 12th was received three or four days ago and would have been answered sooner but I went on picket that evening and the next day the regiment fell back to the river. That night the whole brigade fell back and in fact all of our corps and all of the troops on the left of us. They fell back from their works on the left and moved to the right. Our brigade laid at the river a couple of days supporting the first division of our corps while they threw up new works. They then moved across the Chattahoochie to near Vinings Station where they now lay doing duty. We are lying in the old works of the rebels. We moved to this place/yesterday and have been fixing up our bunks all day. The sutler came up this afternoon and the consequence is that I have got some peaches for supper and plenty of tobacco. Ma you must excuse this scribbling as I have a strained wrist. It is very painful. You can tell how we fix up our camps when I tell you that one of the boys just asked another where some nails were when he was answered “In the house on the mantle-piece.” So you see that we fix up pretty nice. There is three or four bakerys at the river. If I had some money I could get soft bread, rash or pies. The boys will rush there when we get paid off. Well Ma I will close as my wrist pains me so much. I am well. Write soon to
Your aff Son
