Dear Mother.
Your kind and welcome letter of the 2nd was received last evening. I also received two from Morrie and one from Laura. Also some papers from Laura. The reason I received so many together is Hood has got in our rear with his whole army and has been cutting up a little. We destroyed the railroad and telegraph. We have not had any mail for over three weeks. I expect it will be pretty regular now. Hood did not make much by trying to flank the “Prince of Flankers.” We thought/he would get Sherman out of Atlanta as easy as he was got out. I think that Sherman has got him just where he wants him. I see by the Cincinnati papers that Hooker is in command of the northern department with headquarters at Cincinnati. He is a splendid looking officer. Very straight with gray hair and whiskers. He is about six feet tall. The twentieth corps garrisons Atlanta and the surrounding country. We are guarding a railroad bridge over the river. I am sorry to hear that Pa still has bad health. I hope that he will soon regain it. I received that paper you sent in a letter from S Wampscot and think that I noticed the receipt of it in my next letter. I wrote to you some time ago/about sending my overcoat by Henry Buck. If you don’t get to send it by him I expect you can send it by Tom Babbitt as he will be comeing up soon. When you send the coat please send that scarf I used to wear in the place of a necktie and the band that belongs with it. If you can’t send them by either Buck or Babbitt you might send them by Express to Atlanta. The quartermaster goes up every once in awhile and brings down anything for us boys that is there. Tell Morrie that I will answer his letters soon. Love to all. I am well. Write soon to
