William H. Parshall to William F. Parshall and Henrietta Parshall, 3 November 1864
Chattahoochie River, Ga.
Nov. 3rd 1864.
Dear Parents
I expect you are quite anxious to hear from me but I have hardly had time to do anything in the last two or three weeks. Part of the time I was out on foraging expeditions and then on picket and then had to get ready for general inspection which always lasts for half a day. Now we are expecting to march some place we don’t know where. Some say to Savannah and others to some place between Chattanooga and Nashville along the railroad. I sent to Atlanta this morning by Wm Baird for my overcoat. He said that if it was there and was not too big a box he would bring it down with him. I have got a good log house up and have/put up a good mud chimney and hate to leave the place. The chimney is a little too deep but still it draws first rate. I wrote to you and Ma both of you a short time ago and also to Grandpa. Ever since this month set in it has been bad chilly weather. We were paid off last Saturday. We were paid up to the first of September. I sent you sixty dollars by our chaplain Captain J. R. Stillwell. I believe he intends leaving it at (that is all of the money that he has with him) Wm Lewis’ store. If he does you can get it there. Pa I wish that you would get me a good warm pair of gloves and send to me by mail if it is not to much trouble for you to get them. If you send the gloves Pa I wish that you would also send that scarf I used to wear in the place of a necktie and/the gold band that goes with it. I sent home some time ago for a uniform vest and have heard nothing said of it since so don’t know whether it was sent or not. I would like to have one as it would keep me much warmer. If you get one Pa you might get it about two inches longer than the vest that I wore at home. Lt. Col. Doan came to the regiment the other day he has been at home sick. He has been sick ever since before the 20th of July. He was in that fight with us though. He lives in Clinton Co. Major Wilson I suppose is still at home. Well I will come to a close. Write soon to
Your Aff Son
