William H. Parshall to Henrietta Parshall, 6 November 1864
Chattahoochie River, Ga.
Nov. 6th 1864.
Dear Mother.
Your letter of Oct. 23rd was received yesterday morning. I am sorry to hear that Pa is still sick. I do wish that he would get well of that disease of his. If when you receive this letter you have not sent my overcoat you need not send it until I speak to you about it again. We are on the eve of a march some place I cant tell where. Some say that we are going back to Nashville and others say we are going to Savannah. Some say to Macon, some say to Mobile. and according to the accounts of the boys we are going to all parts of the world. If we go to Nashville I will write to you as soon as we get there and then you/can send the coat through to that place very easy. Don’t send it through unless you hear from me at that place. Hood has been in Sherman’s rear but it done him no good to get there for he has not made anything by it and has got whipped badly several times. We don’t know anything about the whereabouts of the rebels. You know more about where they are than we do. We have a great many grapevines about them. Some say that they are in Alabama, others say that they are on the Blue Ridge a part of the Allegheny Mountains I believe. The Blue Ridge I believe is between Georgia and Tennessee. So you see that we don’t know anything about the rebels only when they are immediately in our front. I received a letter from Morrie yesterday morning. He said that he was well. He was boarding at Mrs Sayler’s. Laura and the baby/are well are they. Have you any girl yet. We had orders yesterday to move at seven o’clock this morning. But I happened to be going by the telegraph office (which is right by our company) and heard the operator read a dispatch that he had just taken off the line which read as follows: “The Major General directs that you remain at the bridge until further orders.” It was to Col. Smith commanding our brigade. It just suited us. I don’t know when we will move now but expect we will do so soon. Well I believe I must close and go to getting dinner. Love to yourself and all the rest of them. Please send me some stamps as I am unable to get hold of any. Write soon to
Your Loving Son
