                                                                                                Portland March 11/1862
 
            Dear Brother
                                    As I have never wrote you a letter I thought I would improve my time this afternoon in writing to you. I am well and hope these few lines will find you the same. I expect you are making Shugar by this time. this is the first pleasant day there has been it rained here all day yesterday and took the Snow all off. I like this part of this State a great deal better than Pa only I think it is more Sickily. the Scarlet Fever is all around here. there has a great many died with it, and more being sick expecting every day to kick the Bucket/
 
Jimmy I want you to go over to Gibsons if you can, and see if you can get my Cow take what they will give you if they wont give you enything more than the Cow, take her it will be better than nothing, for I need her now more than enything else Thomas says if I can get her he can have her brought out here in a drove. if I can get her I want to get her out here as soon as I can. Please be so kind as to go and I will do as much for you sometime and write and let me know if you get her or not. My Cow is a red one with a white spot on her rump Please write and tell me all the news Tell Sarah An and Billy that I wrote to them and I guess they have forgotten to awnser my letters or else dont think worth while. I have not/ heard from any one there since I come out here. this is 6 letters I have sent to meadville and not got any awnsers yet. Please write soon

the time that I was out ther after my thing I tolde Bob Dixon that I would leave some money with you for him but I dident sea you after words and I want that when Martha comes down that you should pay/ Bob 50 cts and Red Wilson one doller Martha will let you have the money and oblige yours with Respect
