Enoch Leavitt to Sophia Leavitt, 18 September 1862
Fort Scott Sept. 18th 1862
Dear Mother,
I sit down this afternoon with pleasure to write a few lines to you. I am now enjoying camp with all the blessings and privaledges of health, and fine weather. Mother if ever I felt like giving praise to my Creator I do now for his mercies unto me in restoreing me from sickness to health again while there has been so many all around me taken by the hand of death to their final homes. and Mother I feel to love you more than ever for I cannot but believe that your prayers have not ceased to enter heaven for me that I might not fall victim to diseaze. I am with the company and feel as well as I have since I have been in the service. the health of the men are all improving we have lost our Chaplain he died day before yesterday with the same diseaze that has taken a great many of our men. Our second lieutenant F. S. Case is very sick in St. Louis he was taken sick here and started for home but could get no farther the last we heard from him his father/ had come there to him. but it was doubtful whether he ever got home. Cousin Freemans folks are all well I believe. I see him about camp nearly every day. We still have hopes of getting out of this department this fall. the last news that we got from the Army of the east things look favorable. but I must close for this time.
I am most affectionately your Son.
