Mrs. Susan Wells
Enclos I find letter directed to your Brother Cornelius Smith of Co A, 107th Penna Vols.
It is with feelings of the deepest regret I am compelled at this late hour, (for I have had no time since his death) to break to you the sad news of his death
He was killed on last Friday afternoon the 19th inst by a grape shot, striking him in the stomach. after falling the enemy drove us back, and we afterwards re-gained the lost ground, and found him robbed by the enemy of shoes,/ hat, and all he possessed. we buried him near the spot where he fell. he had at the time he was killed a watch, knife and some money, but the enemy robbed him of all.
He was a good boy, did his duty well on all occasions and his loss is deeply deplored by all who knew him.
You have my heart-felt smp sympathies in this your hour of distress, and can I only commend you to Him the All Wise One, for comfort.
Should you wish to know any thing further concerning him I will give you all the information in my power.
I Am Respectfully/
Your Humble Servt
