Memphis Tenn March 22nd /63
Sister Mary
received your letter was recived and so I took the pleasure to answer it. We are in Camp bout a mile from Town on a hill the weather is very fine and the grass is green the woods begin to look pretty green I have not come across Frank Dick yet I am down town most every day. There is two Bolch boys here from Madison taken pictures Geo. and Hiram they are doing good bisness. It is very dull in camp to day the brass band hass been playing but it has stoped now. There has been a show here and that is gone to. We got payed off/ two weeks ago two months pay. I have spent forty dollars next time I will send home some every thing cost high. There comes a peddler I will quit and go and see what she has got to sell seeing the boys are flocking around her so I have returned a gain and took the pen and now I will tell you what I bought I bought some potatoes by the peace and one dozen of eggs I will go and have a dinner after I write this letter do you ever by potatoes by the peace up in Madison. We have lost our niger and so we have to get our on grub he went down town on a spree and has not come back yet they are picking up all the niggers in town and sendind them down to Vicksburg we think they have sent him there. We will freeze on to one before long I guess./
You give me some hard questions to answer I guess I wont answer them you might know that I would not drink nor do any thing bad. I smoke and swear some times when I cant help it. What has become of Wright Lyman I have not heard from him in [?] while next time you write to me dont forget to tell me where he is he talked some of going to Chicago I dont know wether he has gone or not. How does Frank like to go to school down to the middle ridge tell him that I will answer his letter after a while when I get around to it. Have you ever heard from those Maxfield boys in the seventh Ohio Reg. I have not heard weather thay are dead or live. A[?] Preston/ is here in the guard house I dont know when he will get releived it will be some time yet. You speak about our Captain I guess Lieut. Burrows told you something about him he did not like him very. We were out on inspection yesterday I dont beleive that we will stay here long You wanted to know what king of bread I had to put that butter on I went to the bakery and got some bakerys bread We draw bread every day now one loaf each a day I expect we will have to go to eating hard tack pretty soon I guess I wont write any more to day seeing it is Sunday from Geo Wood
