George W. Wood was born around 1844 in Madison, Ohio, to Elisha and Polly Wood. His father was a farmer and tanner who owned $15,000 of real estate and $15,000 of personal property by 1860. Wood grew up and attended school in Madison. He enlisted in the Union army on February 22, 1862, and mustered into the 15th Ohio Light Artillery. The regiment took part in the siege of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He mustered out on February 22, 1865, when his three-year term of enlistment expired. Wood returned to Madison after the war, and by 1880, he was working as a farmer. He remained in Lake for the rest of his life, and he died there on July 25, 1919.
