George W. Wood to Polly Wood, 8 February 1864
Black River Feb 8/64
Monday morning
Dear Mother
I received your letter Jan 23th and have put off answering it untill now on the count of mooveing around some since. I think that we have got a good safe place for twenty or thirty days to come. Two of our guns have gone out on a cout and we had the luck to stay here and guard the bridge with some other troops. They have had a fight out there some of the wounded have come in that belongs to our Division none from our/ Battery have come in yet and I hope there wont be. We are haveing a pretty good time as well as could be expected the weather is as fine as summer is to home. I received Fathers picture that Mary sent to me it looks as natural as life. Has Byron Rose left the tanyard yet. do you know when Mr Hunt is a comeing back to the Battery. I used that jar of thorough bitters that you sent by Mr Pope I think it helped me some.
My eyes are a bout the same as they was when I left home the worst one dont gain much it/ looks as if it was cross eyed it was a bade old shot about as bade as some that are got in the army. I seen a new recruit yesterday that belong to the third Ohio Battery he had only been with the Battery five days they were in a fight and he got three fingers shot off he thought it was pretty hard but onest.
They Cavalry caught a reb yesterday that was about ten feet long he went to runn and the gurt broke then the horse threw him off and the yankees caught him. I persume they will ketch some more before they come back they look like a lot of sheep/
eighty nine prisnerors have just come in under guards I must go doun and see them.
I have just been looking over your letter it put me in mind of Mrs. Grant if Old Hyram was doun here he could get a good large one black as jet well I guess that will do for to day. Give my love to all
write soon Geo. Wood
