John T. Baskin was born around 1842 in Lowndesville, South Carolina, to William Stuart Baskin. His father was a farmer who owned $6,000 of real estate and $15,692 of personal property by 1860. Baskin grew up and attended school in Abbeville County, South Carolina.
He enlisted in the Confederate army on April 15, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in the 7th South Carolina Infantry. The regiment took part in the First Battle of Manassas. He was admitted to the hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on November 15, 1861, and he was discharged on December 22, 1861.
Baskin returned to Lowndesville after the war, and he married Julia A. Walker. They had at least four children: Edward, born around 1870; John, born around 1875; Margaret, born around 1877; and Thomas, born around 1884. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $800 of real estate. By 1920, he was living in his son Thomas’s household in Lowndesville. He died there of heart disease on August 24, 1925.
