William Stuart Baskin was born around 1817 in South Carolina. He married Sarah Elizabeth White, and they had at least five children: John, born around 1842; Virginia, born around 1846; Ann, born around 1849; William, born around 1854; and Thomas, born around 1856. They lived in Lowndesville, South Carolina, and Baskin worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $2,850 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $6,000 of real estate and $15,692 of personal property, and he enslaved at least eighteen people. By 1870, he owned $5,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. He died sometime after 1880.
