Wilber H. Wells to Brothers, 4 November 1862
Lenior[?] Station Tenn Nov 4th 1862
Dear Brothers
I sieze the present opportunnity of droping you a line to inform you that we are enjoying as much of health and strength as could be expected under the circumstances. we have just returned off of one of the most fatgueing marches that any troops have ever under gone we marched clear through Kentucky and back again without resting we marched 60 days and about 800 miles we are badly worn out it would require a good deal of rest to bring us in a fit condition for good service there were 100 to 150 out of our Reg left behind on our retreat sick most of them were taken up by the yanks and parolled home I have no news to write / I have not had a letter from home since the 22nd of Aug Father stoped all night with Custon at Knoxville as he came from virginia I was very sorry to hear that Simpson was in such feeble health I fear that this winter will be too hard for us unless we can get stationed some where in comfortable quarters for the winter I dont know where we will go too from here we are under murc marching orders now with 10 days rations prepared some say we are going to Murphrey’s burough 30 miles from Nashville Tenn but we are in bad condition for a march of that length now for there are about half of our Reg that are unable for duty /
As for my own part I have just been able to keep up with the Regiment by having all my bagage hauled but I fear that the exposure of the trip is just beginning to take its bad effecst on me I have verry fair simptoms now for a spell of Pneumonia or pluracy but I hope I will escape if I can get to take any care of myself Marion has stood the trip very well has ben well all the time except a few days Custon did not go with us he was left at the Convalescent camp at Knoxville he is still layed up with arm hip & back
I reccon this letter will come unexpectedly to you but there are 4 or 5 of the boys from / your Legion stoping over with us this evening and to night and I concluded to drop you this line through their politeness and I want you to write to us if you find any chance of sending your letter
hopeing that the time may soon come when we may return to our homes in peace I bid you adieu for the present
