Steamer “Columbia” Havana, 13 May 1865.
Elias G. Drake Jr Esqre
New York.
My dear Elias: Soon after my arrival here in January last, I wrote to you, & since have always expected to receive letter from you in which I have been disappointed thus far.
I do not know how to account for it, for I do not want to suppose that sickness or something not agreable is the cause. My letter was addressed 68 Wall St,—& when you write address your letter to L. G. Barbor. You will find enclosed copies of the daguerreotype I possess of you, in our old, happy times. I see with pleasure that the war is drawing to a close; but was very much shocked at the tragical end of your last & good President.
The Confederate Ram “Stonewall” is in this port since the 10th & two American men of war arrived to day. She is a formidable vessel, but I suppose she will surrender herself, as no good / would result with more fighting to a cause irretrievably lost. Some people however believe that she will not give up, without fighting, & if so, there is some chance of our seeing a fight with your iron clads, of which I suppose, some will be coming here soon.
With my respects to your family,
I remain ever your friend
J. G. Barbour
