on the Battle field of
Dalles  June 3 1864
 
            Mr Stires Ser
I am under the peanfull nescessety of giaving you the sad acount of  Hiram H Hallock how was shot on the 28 day of may out on the skirmis line the bullet went thoug through his head it went in at the right temple and came out at the laft sid of the tope of his head. the excedent rckurd about one rclock and he died about one hour after he were unconsus of any thing and as he fell he / ded not move
 
as soon as he was dead he was buried by the side of one tent of our Reg and now there are 3 more by his side whoes feat have been that of Hallock but thire day have come and as a hero he leaved and a martyr he died on his Countrys altar I have nothing I cane send home at presant all there is of his is his pocket book his close and blanket e was bared in but I will send you all there is of his as soon as posible /
 
if you know hwere Hallock folk leaves please and write to them as soon as pocible

                        Sir       You have heard of Hiram Hallocks death no doubt before this as I wrote to C[?] to tell you As Chas. Anderson his mess mate is writing to you I thought I would send this note
The money found in his Pocket is in this letter ($2.35) he sends you and some other trinkets. We are under fire now or I would [?] more. I shall take the first opportunity to write to you after the fight
