                                                                                                Benton Barracks Jan/16th 1862
 
My dear sister i thought that i would write a few lines to you to let you hear from me and i suppose it will make you mad to think that i wrote to you Matilda but i can not help it for i thought i must write to you Well i have been sick since i have been out here the Dr. said that i must put a Blister on my side and that will take about one week longer i have not been on duty but twid twice i think that i have been luckey But the Boys jaws very bad to think that i am to smart for them / But i cannot help it for it is Natural for me you know i had a letter from Ann last night and she has been sick for one week with the inflamation on the Bowels But she was better the morning that she wrote to me and i hope that she will get well soon i think that joseph kues is doing buisness up to the handle he has give Ann $4.00 since i left home and that has been 5 weeks to last tuesday i want him to do what is right with her and the babyes for i am not to home you know Matilda i forgot to speak about your health i hope that you are all well / And i hope you will remain so until i come home again i would like to be at home with my folks for those little children loves me God bless their little souls hatte said that she would be a good girl for her mother until i got home and the captan says that he will go to war if mother will let him go with his paw Matilda i cannot think of any thing more this time for i have got to write to Margret and i have got to write for a letter for the fellow that bunks with me Matilda you must write soon as you get this give my love to all of the folks you must excuse my writing for it is very bad no more from Mr A Richmond to
